Next Kumbayawesome 5/3, brief community update

by scwhouse

Dear friends,

We hope you and yours are enjoying a wonderful start to the spring, and are having an invigorating Easter weekend. The SCW has been quite busy since we last wrote an email update, so we thought we’d take some time now to fill you in on what we’ve been up to the past month and half or so.

First off, we bid Holly farewell as she returned down to Arizona to wrap up her senior year of college.  One of her main projects up here was doing all the planning and most of the execution in getting our brand new garden beds built, filled with soil, and ready to help feed our community and guests with fresh vegetables.  But even more so, we will remember her peaceful presence, and her time here, with gratitude and love.  We wish her all the best moving forward.

Second, we’re delighted to report that our drop in center at the Hillman City Collaboratory is up and running and in full swing!  We’ve slowly but surely gotten some regulars coming through on a daily basis, along with new folks almost every day. Thanks to an abundance of donations, we are able to regularly provide a meal, snacks, coffee, clothes, toiletries, and a ministry of presence and listening five days a week at our new space. In addition, when we have enough volunteers, we are able to continue our rhythm of making oatmeal and coffee and taking it out to the day laborers and homeless folks in the Rainier Valley neighborhood.

While we’re on the topic, we’d invite you to take a look at our Needs List (click here) and see if there’s anything you can contribute.  We would like to be able to better meet the needs of the folks we serve, and that is only possible through a steady stream of donations.  Monetary contributions are also greatly appreciated, and can be made here.  Thank you!

We also invite you to consider volunteering with us at the drop in center. More volunteers allows us to ensure that we are able to both receive people at the drop in center and go out and serve food around the neighborhood, maximizing our capacity to be of service.  Feel free to shoot us an email if you’re interested.

Also, we’re happy to announce that our next Kumbayawesome will be held on Saturday May 3rd at 6:00 PM at our drop in center space, the Hillman City Collaboratory–save the date! For those that haven’t attended before, Kumbayawesome is an open community meal that evolves into an evening of creative expression (singing, poetry, spoken word, ad hoc preaching, etc.)–which is always an incredibly moving and life-giving space for all involved.

All are welcome to come eat, enjoy fellowship, and share as you feel called, or just listen :).  We also plan on continuing our recent practice of inviting some friends of ours to share brief theological reflections (last month provided by Wes Howard-Brook), or experiences with resistance organizing (last month provided by Fr. Bill Bichsel and Br. Gilberto Perez).

We sincerely hope you will be able to join us on May 3rd to participate in our ministry of community building that transcends imperial divisions and hierarchies.  And if you can’t, remember that you are always welcome to join us for dinner, particularly Sunday through Thursday evening. We also hope that some folks can volunteer to help us take down the space and close up shop at the end of the evening.  Many hands make for light work!

So we wish a joyous and liberating Easter to all of you, our beloved extended community: that the truth and power of the Resurrection may inspire us to a deeper expression of Christ’s will on earth.
